History
On September 11th, 2002, Kevin
O'Day, and his sister Kara, requested seventeen Annin
American flags to be flown over the
United States Pentagon. These flags were given to
their family members and Kevin's friends for Christmas
that same year.
Each 3x5 flag was flown, folded by a US Color Guard and certified with the inscription:
"In loving memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic event one year ago. We will never forget".
Because the response and appreciation of the certified flags was so high, it was decided to continue the remembrance of those who lost their lives by flying a limited number of flags over the Pentagon on each anniversary of the September 11th attacks.
These Pentagon Flags and certificates are now used to raise money in support of our troops that are fighting our war on terror.
As part of a grassroots effort, Voices Remembered and their family members get together and sell raffle tickets to those hopeful of winning a Pentagon Flag . Of the tickets sold, one winning ticket is drawn and the lucky owner of the ticket becomes the recipient of a Pentagon Flag and its certificate, displayed in a beautiful wooden oak case.
Authenticy
On the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks, September 11th, 2003, ten ceremonial flags were flown over the Pentagon in the memory of those who lost their lives.
The authenticity of each flag has been certified by the then acting director, John N. Jester, of The Pentagon Force Protection Agency.
Seven of the 2003 Pentagon Flags remain. There are also flags to be used for fundraising from 2004, 2005 and 2006. We have decided 11 flags from each year would be an appropriate number to coincide with the anniversary date.
Oak Display Case
Kevin O'Day, a veteran with over 22 years of service in the US Navy and Naval Reserves, handcrafts each wooden display case accented with wooden rope molding that proudly displays the flag and its accompanying certificate of authenticity.
Kevin's family and friends would like it well known that his donation of time and material for these wooden cases are greatly appreciated. He is also highly respected and appreciated for the time he served Our Country and for the ongoing leadership in our support of those that are still serving. His dedication, thoughtfulness and ingenuity are not to be surpassed by any of us!
